Common questions about MCP servers

What is an MCP server?

A program that implements the Model Context Protocol, exposing a capability like files, a database or web search as a tool an AI assistant can call.

How do I install one?

Most entries are open-source projects you install from their own README. Each entry page shows the original repository, whether a README exists and when we last saw it. An install command appears only when it could be confirmed; where it could not, the page says so rather than printing one that would fail.

Does this page list only MCP servers?

Yes. It filters by entry type (kind=mcp); agent skills and open-source projects have their own filter pages, reachable from the chips above.

Where are categories such as Testing & QA or Marketing & growth?

They are second-level entries, not first-level ones: testing and debugging sit under Developer tools, and ads / social sit under Social & marketing, each with its own page under /mcp-directory/. The first-level chips here already contain those entries; another top-level chip would count the same entries twice.

What we actually check

That the source link resolves, when we last saw it, whether a README exists, and the public star count. All four are checkable on the page itself.
