Build a Coze agent: step by step

A walkthrough of the China edition (coze.cn): register, create a bot, write the persona, add a knowledge base and publish. Each step says where to click.

Before you start

China edition: coze.cn, sign up with a phone number. The free credits are enough for a first bot. Decide one sentence first: who this bot helps and what problem it solves — the persona and knowledge base follow from it.

Steps you can follow

1. Register / sign in: open coze.cn → phone login → enter the workspace.
2. Create a bot: workspace → “Create Bot” → name and description → open the editor.
3. Write the persona: in “Persona & reply logic”, write the role, tone and boundaries. For variables use {{topic}} and define the same name under “Variables”, or the value is empty after publishing.
4. Add plugins / workflows: search the plugin list (web search, browser, images), enable what you need; chain multi-step logic in a workflow and call it from the bot.
5. Attach a knowledge base: “Knowledge base” → create → upload PDF/Word/web pages → auto-chunk → back in the bot, “Add knowledge base”; use retrieval testing with real questions to see whether the right passages come back.
6. Debug: chat in the preview pane; open the debug trace to confirm plugins and the knowledge base are actually called, not hallucinated.
7. Publish: “Publish” → choose a channel (WeChat official account, Feishu, web, Doubao…) → fill the channel details → submit for review; connect the channel after approval.

Three common traps

• Prompt and variables disagree: {{topic}} in the prompt but no variable with that name — the value is empty after publishing.
• Knowledge retrieval is off: chunks too large or too small hurt recall; tune with retrieval testing before publishing.
• Publishing review: WeChat and Feishu channels have qualification and content review; a personal account can only do so much. Get the web channel working first.
