Best MCP servers for file access
8 MCP servers that read or write files on your machine — which directory each one is allowed to touch, whether it can also run programs, and how it installs.
How to choose
For file servers the safety model matters more than the feature list, and it is decided in three places.
- The allowlist is the whole safety story. The leading server takes one or more directories at startup and refuses everything else. Pass the narrowest path that does the job — never
/and not your home directory — because the agent inherits read access to every file you can read in that tree. - Read-only beats clever. If the job is "explain this codebase", a read-only server removes the failure mode where the model edits a file in order to explain it. Keep write access for jobs that really are edits.
- A file server that also runs programs is a different risk. DesktopCommander-style servers execute commands as well as touch files, so one bad instruction becomes a shell instruction. Choose a file-only server unless you actually want the shell.
- Vault and editor servers read one format. Notes-app and editor servers are file access with an opinion about structure — good inside that app, not a general filesystem replacement.
- Stars belong to the parent repo again. The top entry shows 91,352 because it lives inside the servers monorepo; compare what it does, not the star line. Numbers here are the values in our index at build time.
Our call: one local filesystem server with a two-directory allowlist and read-only mode covers most code reading; turn on write access when you are using the agent as an editor, and add a second server only when a specific format (notes, notebooks) needs it.

Why these links: every card opens the entry's own page here first (what it does, how to install, how to verify the numbers); the tool's official site is one click further, and nothing here is a paid placement. Numbers come from public sources and are shown so you can check them.
